POISONING OF THE STOMACH AND INTESTINES – SPECIAL GUIDELINES (INTRODUCTION)
Many people become seriously ill from poisoning because they suffer from constipation, the bowel movement being weak or arrested, at the same time. It is therefore of the utmost importance to empty the bowels immediately to eliminate the toxins. If the bowels do not function and it is not possible to vomit either, then the body is forced to deal with the decomposing material in some other way. If it cannot render it harmless, a very serious condition might result and under certain circumstances could prove fatal, the simple reason for this being the retention of poisonous material. Hence it would be negligent not to take steps to empty the bowels when the first sign of poisoning becomes evident.
Should the patient bring up the remedies as well, then an enema to which a laxative has been added will be helpful. Do not worry about vomiting up a laxative, for the stomach will be cleansed in this way and this in itself will be of value. If the bowels are helped to function, hardened stools will dissolve, even if there has previously been constipation. Dragging, cramping pains will be a sign that things are beginning to move. The body itself may react to the situation by vomiting in order to get rid of the poison. Indeed, the body will do its part if only we give it the help it needs. Frequent diarrhoea is a symptom of poisoning, and if this natural reaction of the body should be absent, an enema is called for.
