MORE HEALING HERBS TO BOAT HEADACHE PAIN

Other herbs frequently prescribed to augment feverfew are camomile, a nervous system relaxant; ginseng, a nullifier of stress symptoms; hawthorn leaf, which may soothe cerebral arteries; rosemary and lemon balm, believed to prevent nausea; wild yam, said to help menstrual migraines; dandelion root, believed to minimize allergic reactions; and willow bark, a recognized painkiller containing chemicals similar to aspirin. Peppermint, cayenne, fennel, hops, catnip and echinacea are also used as headache remedies.

The most popular way to take herbs is in the form of a tea. Make a fairly strong brew, equivalent to infusing one teabag of black tea in a cup of boiling water. Since some medicinal herbs have a bitter taste, you may add lemon, honey or a pleasant-tasting herb tea to improve the taste.

Packaged herbal mixes are also often available. Since herbs are classed as foods, they cannot bear labels describing them as therapeutic. Yet there is one exception. Herbal remedies distributed by FDA-licensed drug companies are free of this restriction. Currently, packaged herbals are distributed by several FDA-licensed drug companies, including Nature’s Way, McZand and Traditional Herbs. Their products use FDA-approved ingredients and me labels prescribe an FDA-approved safe dose.

Among packaged herbals helpful for headaches are antistress herbal formulas which combine herbs like valerian, skullcap and passion flower with minerals such as magnesium and calcium, and also with amino acids. Designed to relax the nervous system and muscles, thesemixes can be useful as prophylactics for chronic tension and migraine headaches.

Among other promising herbal remedies is a tea imported from China consisting of magnolia and petafolia blossom teas. According to studies made in the People’s Republic of China, this tea provides dramatic relief for chronic tension headaches.
