MALE MENOPAUSE: THE SURVIVAL COURSE: THE PHYSICAL FOUNDATION – DRESSING SUCCESSFULLY: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS 4: SPEND MORE NOT LESS
Yes; but in the long run this should be thrift rather than extravagance. Quality clothes are made better and last longer.
Perhaps the point to this commandment is that it is not an order, nor even encouragement, to go out and spend a fortune. It is a recommendation that all you do is spend a little more than you would normally consider doing in order to achieve the kind of style detail and quality of manufacture that is now your due. Only people in their twenties can get away with wearing cheap clothes.
This commandment applies especially to major investment items like suits where only the best will do, but you cannot go far wrong considering the same advice for all items of clothing, shirts and shoes in particular. A man is still judged by his shirt and shoes — in elegant circles the sure sign of a well-dressed man.
Be wary however when considering name-designer clothes. Never buy them simply because a famous name is on the label or because the salesman tells you they are making an important fashion statement.
Just because a designer’s name features in the international magazines this does not mean that the cut of his clothes will automatically fit you or suit you as well as similar ones from other less known companies. Each designer’s basic pattern differs, so when shopping apply the same set of rules about fit, comfort and use as you would when looking at clothes from the less famous.
There are many illustrious names to choose from today, some extremely high in quality and style, and, whether the name is Armani, Cerruti, Lauren, Saint Laurent or one of the others in this elite league, the best investments from their ranges are usually in their selections of classic suits, jackets and outerwear. A suit may seem to cost an inordinately high sum of money but not only will its cut and quality be to the highest standards, it will look its worth and make you feel good when wearing it.
