GET PROSTATE RELIEF FROM AMAZING NEW TECHNIQUES

A rather recent alternative to surgery for BPH is a treatment, approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration, which involves having a tiny balloon inflated inside the urethra. Instead of having any tissue cut away, the inflation of the balloon compresses the overgrown prostate tissue, allowing the urethra to open. While the balloon treatment takes much less time and doesn’t seem to cause the bleeding and retrograde ejaculation that surgery does, follow-up studies indicate it may only provide short-term relief. And since the procedure doesn’t remove any tissue, doctors can not perform a cancer biopsy.

Studies are also underway investigating other potential treatments for BPH. One potential treatment—microwave hyperthermia—involves heating the prostate to about 110 degrees in order to shrink the overgrown tissue. According to researchers, the heating treatment utilizes a catheter with a small microwave heating element. Initial results suggest that this method would allow patients to be treated on an outpatient basis. While the research on this potential treatment continues, researchers speculate that it may one day be the best alternative for men in poor health or who otherwise may shun surgery.

Another potential treatment is laser surgery. This too is in the investigative stages, and involves passing a small telescope-like devise through the penis, then inserting a laser fiber through the telescope. The laser is then fired for about one minute at each of four sites. The tissue which has been irradiated by the laser is cast off in the urine over a period of four to six weeks. Early indications are that this new laser surgery technique could prove to be an effective treatment for BPH.
